About Highland Medical Center

Highland Medical Center is located at 120 Jackson River Road in Monterey, Virginia.  As a Federally Qualified Health Center, Highland Medical Center provides comprehensive primary care and preventive care including medical, dental, behavioral health, physical therapy, wellness and pharmacy service to persons of all ages regardless of their ability to pay or health insurance status. The Medical Center opened in 1996 to provide healthcare to people living in Highland County, a medically underserved region.  It now serves residents from Bath and Augusta Counties in Virginia and Pocahontas and Pendleton Counties in West Virginia.

We are an integrated patient-centered medical home system of care in which a team of health professionals work together with the patient, (and where appropriate, the family) to provide the best possible health outcomes.  With a medical home, the patient is joining a team that consists of a medical provider and other healthcare professionals including behavioral health specialists, dentist, dental hygienist, nurses, pharmacists, case worker, physical therapist, trusted friends or family members (if you wish), and – most importantly – you the patient.  Working with a team may improve the quality of your health care and shorten the time it takes to get care.

We want patients to be a part of the health care team by taking an active approach to their health care and staying healthy.

Opened in 1996
Located in Monterey, Virginia, the Highland Medical Center, Inc. (HMC) is a non-profit, Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). The medical center opened in 1996 as the first organized healthcare provider to the medically underserved people living in Highland, Bath and western Augusta Counties in Virginia and in eastern Pocahontas County and southern Pendleton County, West Virginia.

Highland County, one of a small number of designated frontier counties East of the Mississippi, is a remote and mountainous region of Virginia. The closest hospitals are more than 40-50 miles away. The center is the sole point of entry for urgent and primary healthcare, providing medical, dental and mental health services for the 2,500 people living in Highland County. In addition, residents of nearby western Augusta County find HMC services convenient, especially given the referral network that HMC continues to build with specialists at Augusta Medical Center and Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

As HMC has grown, so has its service to the population south, west, and north of Highland. To the south, Bath County is a well-known outdoor recreational and resort destination in western Virginia. Bath's population is approximately 4,600 persons.

To the west, Pocahontas County, WV offers tremendous recreational opportunities in its mountainous terrain. More than one million tourists visit the county each year. The permanent population of Pocahontas County is approximately 8,500 persons.

To the north, Pendleton County, WV is situated in the Potomac Highlands. The South Branch of the Potomac River is a key geographic and recreational aspect of life in Pendleton. The county's population is approximately 7,600 persons.

This region of ancient mountains, long stretches of rural highways and beautiful scenic byways, is our core service area. HMC actively reaches out to current and prospective patients living in these isolated and semi-isolated rural communities.

Our Mission is Quality Health Care for All

The mission of Highland Medical Center, Inc. is to provide access to the highest quality primary and preventive care to citizens of the region regardless of their ability to pay. Highland Medical Center serves all residents, although we target those with low income, the elderly and farmers. The medical center was established and supported by citizens within the community without any public funding up to 2003, and community financial support continues to be an important contribution to HMC's ongoing success today.

In 2003, Highland Medical Center received its first funding as a Federally Qualified Health Center. This federal funding has enabled the medical center to expand and improve upon the type and quality of services. As the sole medical/dental provider in Highland County and in remote, surrounding areas, this level of financial support has been critical to our ability to provide access to affordable, quality healthcare. The medical center’s presence within the region has helped the county and surrounding areas provide economic growth and stability.

Community Vision for the Future
The new strategic plan adopted by the Board of Directors will enable Highland Medical Center to more fully meet the emerging healthcare needs of citizen’s within our area. Importantly, the medical center also receives support financially through a separate community organization, The Highland Medical Center Foundation, Inc. This foundation administers funds to assist the medical center with improvements to its medical equipment and facility.

Highland Medical Center is located in Monterey, Virginia in beautiful Highland County.
Every day, our dedicated HMC Team literally touches the lives of children, adults and seniors.

HMC provides primary care, dental, physical therapy, pharmacy and counseling services to residents of Highland, Bath, Pendleton, Pocahontas and West Augusta.

We accept many insurance plans and uninsured patients pay based on income. Please ask about payment options.
